OK, so you’ve driven it, a zillion times, in traffic or without (lucky you!). You’ve looked at it. Surely photographed it. Maybe walked it. Maybe even biked it. BUT….. Have you ever LEARNED about it???
Frommer’s calls this local gem of ours "possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world.” It opened in 1937 and was, until 1964, the longest suspension bridge main span in the world, at an amazing (but really - we do it endlessly!) 1.3 miles! But hey, in traffic, who’s counting! And who’s really looking up and understanding this GEM in our own backyard! So - let’s open our Dartmouth eyes and go back to school - while having a great walk!
Join the DAASV for a docent-led tour of the Golden Gate Bridge. We have arranged for a skilled and knowledgeable City Guides docent to guide us through the history, architecture and art - yes, art! - of the Golden Gate Bridge. (Have you ever had a chance to look closely at the patterns created with all those rivets? Awesome!) Heralded as one of the top ten architectural and engineering achievements of the 20th century, this gem of design is perhaps the greatest and most globally famous symbol of San Francisco and the Bay Area as a whole.
Our docent will fill us in on the history of our bridge - OUR bridge! - and its amazing design and creation, and on the history of the process of making it happen. You may have heard bits and pieces of that history, but this will be the real deal, up close and personal!
And PLEASE be sure to bring your whole family. Kids love the walk and the tales of the bridge!
This is a Bridge Walk you will never forget!
When: 12/10, at 11:00 sharp - we’ll set out pretty much on the dot!
Where: Meet at the statue at the base of the bridge (by the Visitors Center)
