A New Take on DAASV’s Friday Afternoon Happy Hour: Wine(d)down Time!

Mixing after-work “wine time” with art!

Please join us for the second of our new Friday Happy Hours in Palo Alto, "Wine(d)down Fridays".  It is a great opportunity to get to know or catch up with your fellow Silicon Valley Dartmouth alums. But this Happy Hour comes with a difference: It’s “Wine Time - with Art!”

The famous Pace Gallery in Palo Alto has offered to host Dartmouth alumni for wine and cheese in their Hamilton Avenue gallery - while one of their curators gives us a tour of some pretty spectacular works by the famous artist David Hockney taken from visits to Yosemite National Park in 2010 and 2011. 

Hockney has had a continuous fascination with the landscapes of the American West, and his visits to Yosemite are highlights of that interest. Hockney has also always had a fascination with technology and how it can be used as an artistic tool. Hockney took his iPad to Yosemite and used it to draw the landscape in situ as he experienced it. The compactness of the device and the software available on it allowed him to work in an immediate and impromptu manner.

During the 2010 trip, Hockney created over twenty drawings, which he titled The Yosemite Suite. Recognizing that the drawings done on the iPad could be produced as large prints, Hockney calibrated each gesture and color accordingly, carefully transposing the scale from screen to print. In 2011, Hockney began experimenting with larger prints of his iPad drawings, which measure as high as eight feet tall.

Elizabeth Sullivan, President, Pace Palo Alto has said that this collection of Hockney's Yosemite work captures the majestic beauty and awe-inducing scale of this Yosemite landscape we can call home. Northern Californians will revel in this body of work.
