Jill Fredston ’80   Rowing to Latitude: Journeys Along the Arctic’s Edge

Jill has explored over 20,000 miles of the Arctic in her ocean-going rowing shell.  Along with her husband, Doug (in his own small boat), she has traversed the rugged shorelines of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Spitsbergen, and Norway.  Together the couple has battled mountainous seas and hurricane-force winds. They have dragged their boats across ice flows, fended off grizzlies and polar bears, and have been serenaded by humpback whales.

Jill says these trips are "neither a vacation nor an escape, they are a way of life." Rowing to Latitudeis a celebration of these northern journeys and a passionate testimonial to the extraordinary beauty and danger of wild places as well as the challenges and joys of living an unconventional life.
