The HOP at Stanford: Oct 14 & 15

The Hop is coming to Stanford University’s Bing Concert Hall on October 14 and 15. 

Mary Lou Aleskie, the Howard Gilman '44 Executive Director of the Hopkins Center and Kim Lessow Crockett '92 invite you to join them at Stanford Live for the West Coast premiere of The Ritual of Breath Is the Rite to Resist. Created by a faculty and alumni creative team, this interdisciplinary opera responds to the murder of Eric Garner and the ongoing loss of Black life at the hands of police.

Commissioned and produced by the Hop, and co-commissioned by Stanford Live, the theatrical event leverages the power of music, song, dance movement, visual arts, and text projections to create a deeply moving and meditative experience that breaks down the barriers between performers and audiences. In this way, The Ritual of Breath Is the Rite to Resist behaves like a communal happening that encourages everyone to breathe together and to find the empathy, understanding, and strength necessary to heal and spur action beyond the stage. The creative team for the project includes visual artist Enrico Riley ’95, director Niegel Smith ’02, and scenic and projection designer Peter Nigrini ’93.

Throughout its journey, the creative team has been inspired by the healing practices of survivor mothers who have lost their children to state-sanctioned violence. Guided by Dr. Shamell Bell and in concert with Eric Garner's mother, Gwen Carr, the work reflects the experiences and conversations held among the artists, these mothers, Dartmouth students and our local community affected by the crisis. This social impact work is the grounding for seven rituals, each rooted in one of the seven movements in the opera. These participatory rituals are shared with all of us co-conspirers—artists, activists, attendees—in the days leading up to the opera.

Additionally, Ritual of Breath creative team members Enrico Riley and composer and Stanford Professor Jonathan Berger will give a special talk about the new opera at the Minnesota Street Project on October 12 from 6-7pm in conjunction with an exhibition of Riley’s work on display from October 1-29, 2022.
